PTSD Treatment with TMS

What Causes Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD and its variants, like cPTSD, are life-altering mental health conditions. Life with PTSD is full of challenges that most people without it may struggle to understand.

PTSD is caused by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, such as combat, car accidents, natural disasters, or physical assault. The list of traumas that could cause a person to develop PTSD is much longer than these few examples, though.

Any serious traumatic experience someone has could lead to PTSD. Whether it’s a singular event, like a house fire or a plane crash, or a series of events, like living with domestic abuse—-the impact is lasting. It often reverberates throughout a PTSD survivor’s life.

PTSD can develop when the brain’s processing of the trauma is disrupted, leading to symptoms like flashbacks, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. The most effective solutions provide symptom relief so the PTSD survivor can work on processing these experiences and changing their response to them.

5 Common Symptoms of PTSD

  • Intrusive Memories: Flashbacks, nightmares, and distressing memories of the traumatic event.
  • Avoidance: Avoiding places, activities, or people that remind you of the trauma.
  • Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: Persistent negative thoughts, feelings of hopelessness, memory problems, and emotional numbness.
  • Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions: Being easily startled, feeling on edge, having difficulty sleeping, and experiencing irritability or angry outbursts.
  • Hyperarousal: Increased alertness, anxiety, and vigilance to potential threats.

TMS for PTSD and Other Treatment Approaches

There are several effective treatments for PTSD. However, one of the biggest challenges in treating post-traumatic stress is that most treatments take a while to provide relief. Treatments like CBT or exposure therapy are often effective, but they can take months to yield results.

Anti-depressants can provide symptom relief within a few weeks. Anti-anxiety meds work faster, but many of them are potentially addictive, and all medications can have side effects and downsides.

Two treatments stand out, however, for often providing relief within weeks rather than months (or years) and lacking medication’s side effects and risks. The first is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, also called EMDR. The second is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, aka TMS for PTSD.

One other advantage both EMDR and TMS for PTSD share is that they are compatible with any of the other treatments. In fact, many patients find they get even better results when they add a treatment like TMS to their existing PTSD treatment protocol. After all, there’s no such thing as getting “too much help.” Where relief from PTSD symptoms is concerned, you want all you can get.

Effective PTSD Treatment Options

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps change negative thought patterns related to the trauma.
  • Family Therapy: Involves family members to improve communication and support.
  • Group Therapy: Provides support from others who have experienced similar traumas.
  • Mindfulness and Stress Management Techniques: Helps manage stress and improve emotional regulation.
  • Exposure Therapy: Involves safely facing situations and memories that cause distress.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Uses eye movements to process traumatic memories.
  • Psychiatric Medications: Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can help manage symptoms.
  • TMS Therapy for PTSD: Uses precisely applied magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain to effect symptom relief (proven effective in clinical research).
  • How TMS Treatment for PTSD Works

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) helps treat PTSD by targeting specific areas of the brain involved in the disorder, particularly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the salience network, which includes the anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula, and amygdala.

    Here’s how it works:

    Electromagnetic Pulses

TMS uses electromagnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. These pulses are delivered through a coil placed on the scalp, targeting specific brain regions.

    High-Frequency Stimulation

High-frequency TMS is applied to the left DLPFC, which is proven effective in reducing PTSD symptoms. This stimulation helps to normalize the activity in these brain regions, which are often overactive in individuals with PTSD.

    Reduction of Hyperarousal

By modulating the activity of the salience network, TMS can help reduce hyperarousal and the exaggerated stress response associated with PTSD. This can lead to a decrease in symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts.

    Improving Emotional Regulation

TMS can also help improve emotional regulation by enhancing the function of the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in managing emotions and reducing the impact of traumatic memories.

    TMS is Non-Invasive and Well-Tolerated

TMS is a noninvasive treatment that does not require surgery or anesthesia. It is generally well-tolerated, with mild headaches or scalp discomfort being the most common side effects.

By targeting these specific brain regions and modulating their activity, TMS can help alleviate the symptoms of PTSD and improve the overall quality of life for individuals suffering from the disorder.

If You Are Living with PTSD

If you have PTSD, one thing you should know is that you are a hero. Let us be the first if no one has told you that yet. Living with PTSD is NOT easy.
